CHAPTER 9

Stacy was tempted to pack her bags and leave tonight after Luis had said such a degrading remark regarding what they had been doing all week. Sure, it was what she had agreed to; it was the truth. But the way he said it in such a debasing manner, hurt.

And the reason it hurt was because she was falling in love with him and Trevor. After speaking to his mother this evening at the party, she knew his family was exactly what she’d been dreaming of.

They were loving, caring, and concerned about one another. His mother had asked her not to hurt her son. His mom asked if she knew he had PTSD and if she could learn to live with his disorder. She’d asked Stacy if she would do everything to protect him and Trevor.

And she’d answered like she was going to be there forever, when in reality, she only had two more days with them. Two more days before she had to leave and fly home.

Stacy’s own mother had never been that protective, and she admired Elizabeth Nash for trying to take care of her big strong Navy SEAL son. But his parent also asked her about Trevor and if she could accept that he was Hispanic and that his family had problems.

Everyone had problems. Her own family had suffered before she even knew the meaning of the word. Even today, what her father had done haunted her.

Trevor was one of the kindest men she’d ever met, and she didn’t care about the color of his skin. All she cared about was the integrity of her men. And how they would love and care for her.

But then again, she’d agreed from the beginning that there would be no strings. No commitments. And now that agreement bothered her because she wasn’t certain she could go through it without her heart breaking.

At the time, she’d never thought in a hundred years that her heart would get involved, but she loved these two men and the way they had cared for her and shown her their lifestyle and how they treated women.

No man she’d ever dated for weeks, or even months, had shown her this kind of gentle, commanding way of being cared for.

After Luis apologized to her, they had stayed at his mother’s party for another thirty minutes before he wanted to leave. And maybe it was for the best because her heart was no longer in a partying kind of mood.

For the first time, she doubted her decision and wondered if she should just leave.

Naked, she swam the length of the pool, trying to soothe her hurt pride and wounded heart.

“I’m sorry,” Luis said from the darkness. “Tonight, I realized that seeing you with my mother brought up so many fears. And I did everything I could to put distance between us.”

Turning in the pool, she gazed at him.

“Why?”

He sighed. “Before I went into the Navy, there was a girl in college I wanted to marry and have children with.
